Theodore C. Blegen, B.A. (1910) Augsburg College, M.A. (1915), Ph.D. (1925) University of Minnesota. Appointed the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1927 and served as dean of the Graduate School from 1940 until 1960. Theodore C. Blegen was born in Minneapolis on July 16, 1891. He received his bachelor's degree from Augsburg College in 1910 and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1915 and 1925. Newton Horace Winchell came to Minnesota in 1872 when the Legislature offered him $1,000 to complete the first geological survey of the state. He was the first person to map Minnesota's geology and mineral deposits; he discovered the valuable low-grade iron ore deposits of the Mesabi and Vermilion ranges.
